The largest immigrant population in each state


The proportion of the U.S. population born outside the country was about 15 percent in 1910. The share fell throughout the 20th century but has since risen again to just shy of 13 percent. As shown in the map above by the Pew Research Center, most immigrants a century ago were from Germany. Now, Mexico is the most common country of origin.
