Only 2% of drivers on this highway obey the speed limit
As it weighs increasing the speed limit on certain interstates, Illinois has been looking at what speeds people actually go on the highway. The answer? Fast. Too fast. Really really fast.
Just check the above chart. Seven out of the nine highways had speeding rates above 90 percent. The other two still had majority speeding rates, of 62 and 73 percent respectively. It’s no wonder, given numbers like that, that over 32,000 people died on the road in 2011, the last year for which the National Highway Safety Administration has numbers.
