A Brooklyn medical lab has created a gel that can stop bleeding in a wound in a matter of seconds.

VetiGel is made from polymers derived from the cell walls of plants.

These polymers have the power to reassemble into the structure of whatever area they’re attached to, and when applied to a surface wound, the gel quickly forms a “very durable” clot, according to Joe Landolina, who started the idea four years ago as a freshman at New York University.

Current technology closes wounds in five minutes at most, but as the gel’s makers explain, that isn’t enough time to save a soldier’s life once he or she injures a critical artery.

VetiGel, however, would take only around 15 seconds.
